3 Simple Reasons Why Every Writer Needs an Editor

Posted on May 30, 2013

All writers want to believe the best about their writing. They might assume that their writing is good enough without any help and they don’t want anyone to edit it in fear that it might change and the piece will no longer be original. As a writer myself, I also once believed these assumptions. I thought that if anyone edited my writing then it would no longer be my own. But I am here to tell you that this is not always the case. Seeking advice from an editor may challenge you at first, test your patience, or damage your ego, but in the long run, utilizing an editor can only help you; it will improve your writing and help you learn from your mistakes. Here’s how:

1)      An editor is an outside opinion who can see mistakes that you can’t.

As writers, we all can be blinded by what we write. More times than not I have looked at a piece of writing and thought that it was the best it could be, until an editor gladly stepped in and showed me sentences that could be clearer and more concise, and revealed more coherent paragraph structure that would benefit the piece. There will always be things that you cannot see, simply because of your biased eye. Many writers even take a break from writing in order to have a fresh opinion when they read it a few weeks later. However, it is much more efficient if you have an editor—or even better, a team of editors—to take a glance at your writing and give you an unbiased opinion. This quick process of eliminating simple mistakes will take your writing to the next level.

2)      An editor can show you how to improve your writing for the future.

It is easy to fall into a rut while writing. Many times writers find themselves writing the same story, the same lead, the same sentences just with different wording… if every piece of writing is beginning to sound redundant, it may be time to consider a change. An editor is a great resource who can point out the dull sentences in your work and help you rewrite them in a more interesting and unique way. Also, reworking your writing is a great way to learn how to approach writing with a fresh look. By examining your writing and using new words to express similar ideas, you can expand your writing as a whole. An editor can assist you during this process and help you determine which parts need reworking and closer examination to improve the piece. You can only grow as a writer by learning from your mistakes, and an editor is the perfect person to help you do that.

3)      An editor supports you through the writing process and helps generate creativity.

One of the many challenges of writing that all writers are familiar with is “writer’s block”. There will always be times when you know you should be writing, but you don’t. There will be times that it will seem like there are more important things to be done. Even when you try to sit down and type, you realize that you don’t know what to write. That is when you need to call an editor. They can look over your writing and give you more ideas about what to say. The editor won’t have a head filled with questions, but can focus on the piece with a clear mind and contribute good ideas. Also, knowing that you have an editor as a support to your writing is great encouragement. They can give you deadlines, rework your sentences, and help get your creative juices flowing. In the end, it is hard to believe that you once thought doing it alone was the best idea.

Reviewing your writing without any outside help will not yield the best results. If you want your writing to be the best it can be, you need an editor. If you still think that you don’t need an editor, even after learning all of the above reasons, I suggest that you ask an outside opinion to look over your writing. I guarantee that they will find something that needs work. After realizing that everyone needs help, hire an editor and reap the benefits. I know that your writing will improve in all of the ways listed above, simply because every writer needs an editor.  copyedits
